HEADLINERS TODAY

Nigerian major newspapers today, December 14, focused on the military raid in the residence of Nigeria Shi’ite leader, Sheik Ibraheem Zakzaky, as his whereabout remains unknown and the ongoing arms probe deal involving the former National Security Adviser, Col Sambo Dasuki (rtd).
Vanguard reports that no fewer than 20 members of the Shi’ite sect were killed, yesterday, December 13, as the Nigerian military cracked down on the sect for blocking the highways during their public procession in Zaria, Kaduna state.

The sect, however, claimed that hundreds of its members were killed by soldiers who stormed three of its locations with heavy military weapons. It was gathered that the  troops engaged members of the sect throughout the night as heavy shootings and sounds of explosions were heard in Gyallesu and Sokoto Road, where Hussainiyya – the spiritual centre of the sect – is located.

The Nigerian Army and members of the sect have accused each other of instigating attacks that led to the death of members of the movement on Saturday, December 12.

Meanwhile, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has begun a fresh investigation into what it described as a “curious” transfer of N6.7bn from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation to the Office of the National Security Adviser and two other agencies after the 2015 presidential election.

A top source in the EFCC, who confided in The PUNCH on Sunday, December 13, said the commission had started investigation into reasons for the payments, which the office of the SGF said were for security services.
The letter, which authorised the payments, was dated March 30, 2015, two days after the presidential election was held on March 28.

In a related development, accused key players in the $2.1 billion arms deal prosecution would have their dates in court this week starting from today. Former National Security Adviser (NSA), Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd), former chairman, Daar Communications Plc, Chief Raymond Dokpesi and former Sokoto State Governor Attahiru Bafarawa and others would tell the court their roles in the alleged big scam.

This is even as Dasuki and six others including companies would today be arraigned before Justice Hussaini Baba Yusuf of the Federal High Court, Abuja over the fraud. Dokpesi who had been in EFCC custody, returns to court today when his lawyers would know if his bail application sails through. In the fraud, a company collected N1.45 billion to offer special prayers.

According to Daily Sun, other accused persons are a former Director of Finance in the Office of the NSA, Shiabu Salisu, a former Executive Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Aminu Baba Kusa, Acacia Holdings Limited and Reliance Referral Hospital Limited.
