President Buhari To Redeem Unfilfilled Pledge To 1985 Eaglets

President Buhari with the 1985 Eaglets team

Nigerian president, Muhammadu Buhari has disclosed his intentions to redeem the unfulfilled pledge he made to the victorious Golden Eaglets in 1985. He made this vows when he hosted the team at the Dodan barracks on their arrival from China where the tournament held.

A press statement signed by his spokesperson, Shehu Garba quoted the President that he was not aware that states did not go by his order that year:

“It is a pity that those promises were never fulfilled.

“It is unfortunate that our players, who did us proud on the world stage went unrewarded for their efforts, despite a presidential directive to the state administrators that they be honored in their home states.”

He apologized to the players who were unable to get the promised items and assure them of compliance this time around: “I apologize for whatever embarrassment and disillusionment in your country these raised and then dashed hopes may have caused you. My government will do all within its power to remedy the situation,” he assured.

However, a former Golden Eaglets player, Jonathan Akpoborie urged the president via his facebook page to redeem the pledge made to the team in 1985:

As we celebrate our new Golden Eaglets, I am reminding Mr president of promises he made to this team in this picture 30 years ago. Thank you sir.

The Nigerian Golden Eaglets won the FIFA U-17 tournament back-to-back on Sunday in Chile.
