Ex-Niger Delta Militants Protest Non-payments

Some aggrieved Niger Delta ex-militants who claimed that they were in the creeks working for their bosses and participated in the amnesty training at Obubra in Cross River state, took to the streets of Port Harcourt, the Rivers state capital, protesting the non-payment of five months stipends by the federal government.

The former militants who said they were tired of being frustrated by promises and lip services on the payment of their five months allowances by the Amnesty office.
The aggrieved ex-militants numbering over four hundred took the protest to the National Youth Council of Nigeria located along Azikiwe Road in the state capital

The ex-agitators said that they had reported the non-payment of their allowances to the police, Department of State Services (DSS), electronic media houses and human rights commission.
They lamented that some of their former bosses were holding influential positions in the government of the state, either in the Rivers state House of Assembly or at local government areas as members of caretaker committee.

They said that for the sake of peace, they were being patient about channelling their grievances in a civil manner and have contacted relevant authorities but got no response. The erstwhile agitators warned that they would never work for their former bosses or carry arms on behalf of anybody because they had been used and dumped.

Addressing the aggrieved ex-agitators at the secretariat of the NYCN, the chairman of the youth council in the state, Sukubo Saraigbe Sokubo, urged the protesting ex-militants to remain calm with a promise of taking their complaint to the relevant authorities.
Meanwhile, the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) had recently stated that it was not in support of the re-election of Seriake Dickson as the governor of Bayelsa state.
The group also warned the presidency to stay clear of the forthcoming Bayelsa guber race and not attempt to rig it.
