There are strong indications that leadership
of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have planned a crisis meeting
today, November 30.
According to a report on Nigerian Tribune, the plot is aimed at selecting Alhaji Yahaya Bello as a replacement for the late Abubakar Audu who died on Sunday, November 22.
Speaking to the media organization, an undisclosed source said today’s meeting is seen as a make or mar sitting, as the supplementary election fixed for December 5 by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) edge closer.
The APC source said: “We are currently grappling with three kinds of headaches right now. One is the insistence of Honourable James Faleke as the right candidate to replace the late Audu and the second is the refusal of the people of Kogi East senatorial district to accept the choice of Yahaya Bello.
“There is also the issue of refusal of the chosen candidate and the existing running mate to work together.”
“There is a crisis meeting planned for the party’s secretariat today. It is expected that the meeting will help us sort out the lingering headaches.
“If we get that through, we will be in a position to announce the replacement for Audu. The leaders are really hopeful of the Monday’s meeting,” another source close to the party said on Sunday.
James Faleke had earlier written a letter to INEC on Kogi state governorship poll. He expressed sadness over the passage of late Audu Abubakar, but however told the electoral commission to declare him governor-elect.
Twenty seven aspirants contested the APC primary elections in Kogi with late Prince Audu scoring 1,109 votes to emerge victorious.
Other aspirants were Alhaji Yahaya Bello, 703 votes; Senator NurudeenAbatemiUsman (400), Sanusi Abubakar (309), Air Vice Marshal SaliuAtawodi (183), James Ocholi (90), OlusolaOlumoroti (58), Suleiman Baba Ali (28), RotimiObadofin (16), Dr Tim NdaDiche (13) and Abdullahi Suleiman (11), Clarence Olafemi, the former acting governor of Kogi State, (7), Senator YahayaUgbane (8), YakeenAbdullahi (8), Idris Danjuma (5) and Col. Ahmed Usman(6).
Report had emanated that Alhaji Yahaya Bello, the runner up in the APC primaries had been selected as the party’s candidate. However, the APC denied the allegations, saying it is yet picked a replacement for its late Audu.
Audu, who died on Sunday, November 22, was buried on Monday, November 23,according to Muslim rites.
The late APC governorship candidate was leading his opponent Captain Idris Wada of the Peoples Democratic Party by 41,353 votes. The INEC declared the poll inconclusive and scheduled a supplementary election in 91 polling units for Saturday, December 5.
In practice, whoever APC nominates has already become the Governor of Kogi state since PDP’s candidate Governor Idris Wada cannot possibly close the gap in the supplementary election, hence the high stakes.
