3 High Profile Nigerian Professional League Players That Fell Short Of Expectations

The 2014/2015 Nigeria Professional League season has come to an end with Enyimba crowned champions. It was a long season filled with a lot of talking points and historic events.
However, some high profile players failed to live up to their billing.
Naij.com sports has put together a list of some of these players who fell well short of the expectations of fans, the media and they themselves.

Take a look below:

Chigozie Agbim (Enugu Rangers)
Having being named in Nigeria’s squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, many expected Enugu Rangers goalkeeper Chigozie Agbim to exhibit the qualities that the former Super Eagles coach Stephen Keshi saw in him.

However, this panned out not to be, as a string of poor performances from the 31-year-old helped Rangers to a 12th place finish in the Nigeria Professional Football League this season.
Chigozie Agbim was frozen out at Enugu Rangers in September after his howler cost the Enugu club a home game against FC IfeanyiUbah in August.

Rangers lost 3-2 to Ifeanyi Ubah and Agbim was widely blamed for the home loss and even needed a police escort to escape the wrath of angry fans.

Agbim had come under intense criticism at the 2014 African Nations Championship (Chan) in South Africa and many questioned his inclusion in Stephen Keshi’s 23-man-squad after several high-profile howlers at the Chan handed more ammunition to the critics.

While an assistant at Enyimba to the Peoples Elephant former coach Zachary Baraje, Imama Amapakabo, the coach of Rangers, rendered a damning verdict on the shot-stopper.

“If I had the chance to pick five of the best goalkeepers in the league, Agbim will not make the list,” Amapakabo had told supersport.com in February 2014.
Chijioke Ejiogu (Enyimba)

Ejiogu took Nigerian football by storm in 1999 when, as a teenager, he helped an unknown amateur league side, FC Arugo from Owerri to the semi-finals of the FA Cup (now the Federation Cup). His exceptional agility, particularly his penalty-stopping heroics, which has since become his trademark, earned him the nickname, ‘Arugo Monkey’ from the appreciative Lagos football fans.

Ejiogu crossed over to Enyimba in 2008 and after remarkable performances on the pitch all through the years, many expected Chijioke Ejiogu to command the number one shirt for Enyimba this season.
The 31-year old however started on a good note and had a pretty good first stanza in the NPFL.

He will however lose his starting shirt to Femi Thomas who manned the posts and was instrumental in Enyimba’s success this season.

They say old wine tastes better, but that’s not the case of 31-year-old Enyimba shot stopper Chijioke Ejiogu as he lost his number one spot to the in-form Femi Thomas.
Kano Pillars goalkeeper, Theophilus Afelokhai, has emerged on the shopping list of Enyimba International ahead the 2015/2016 domestic and continental seasons to give the pair of Chijioke Ejiogu and Femi Thomas competition.

Odinga Odinga (Sharks FC)
The likes of Victor Ezeji, Emeka Lucky, Kester Uweluyi, and Lucky are some of the players who Odinga lined up with in his early days at the Port Harcourt club and 15 seasons later, Ezeji, who was persuaded out of retirement by Heartland, is the only one still playing.

Having served Sharks for 15 years, Odinga Odinga failed to rescue his team as they went crashing to relegation on the final day of the 2014/2015 season.

A 1-0 defeat to Abia Warriors in week 38 meant that the Sharks will be playing in the Nigeria National League next season, and there could not have been a worse nightmare for a club Odinga has dutifully served for 15 seasons.

Enyimba wrapped up the League title garnering 70 points after 38 round of League matches played.
They have now won the NPFL title in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2010 and 2015. They were African Champions in 2003 and 2004.
