President Muhammadu Buhari has acknowledged
the deplorable state of road in the country which he agreed needs urgent
attention by the federal government.
Buhari also added that there is a need for urgent development of infrastructure in such sector as power and rail.
The president made this commitment on Wednesday, November 25, when he hosted senators at the new Banquet Hall of the presidential Villa, Abuja, The Punch reports.
He said: “The roads are dead. Those who drive between Lagos and Ibadan will have a lot of stories to tell you. Those who drive from Kaduna to Jebba may have more stories to tell. The same thing is applicable to the East West Road.”
Buhari pleaded with the Senate to help his administration in paying attention to the perennial problem of infrastructure such as rail, power and road.
The president also urged the Senate’s committees to look at the various agreements the country had entered into the past and see where the nation had been defaulting in terms of payment of counterpart findings.
Buhari stressed that if the country can get it right in railway development, this will help to save lives and cost of fuel.
The Nigerian leader lamented that continued free fall of oil price oil the global market has adversely affected the Nigeria’s economy.
President Buhari thanked the Senate for the speedy screening and confirmation of his ministerial nominees saying that the Senate should give the nation’s budget approval the same speed.
“We are enjoying tremendous goodwill outside this country. Whatever we do, let us have it in mind that people have confidence in this government,” he said.
Acknowledging the reception given the Senate, its president, Bukola Saraki pledged the continuous support of the Senate for the present administration saying that the task ahead of the nation is enormous.
Saraki said that the Senate under his watch would not be sentimental when treating national issue.
He said: “Petrol does not know the APC or the PDP. We will always work hard in the interest of the country in everything we do.”
The parley was attended by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo; Bola Ahmed Tinubu, deputy Senate president, Ike Ekweramadu and other top government officials.
Meanhwhile, Movement for Actualization for Sovereign State of Biafra and Indigenous People of Biafra had denied resolutions of the south east governors forum.
MASSOB in a statement saying that it did not address the key reason for the protest – the continued custody of Nnamdi Kanu, the director of Radio Biafra.
