Enugu State Commissioner for Housing, Engineer Charles Ogbo Asogwa has charged Nigeria’s professional golfers as well as the amateurs to imbibe a culture of discipline to excel in the game.
The commissioner in an interview with Sports Day recently in Enugu during the Ladies Open opined that it will be difficult for Nigerian golfers to excel, particularly at the international level because they lack discipline.
The commissioner a golfer and member of Enugu Golf Club believed that some Nigerian golfers live a life that is at variance with the principles of golf.
Dwelling on the poor performance of Nigerian golfers at international tournaments he said, “Nigerian golfers are failing to excel at the international level because they are not disciplined.
“Golf is a game that brings out whom you are. If you are a cheat, it will show, if you are a liar it will show, if you are a drunk, whatever it is, it will reveal.
“For instance, I discovered that Nigerian golfers after their game, they go drinking and even get drunk instead of going to the drawing board for a post-mortem. The foreign players don’t do that and that is why they are excelling,” he said.
The commissioner concluding enthused that, “Golf is lucrative and self sustaining if only the player is disciplined and I encourage the upcoming players to take advantage of it by obeying the principles of the game.
